Martial law lifted in Armenia, Parliament votes in favor of opposition’s bill

The Armenian parliament lifted the martial law declared in Armenia on September 27, 2020. 
 
The proposal, initiated by the opposition Prosperous Armenia and Bright Armenia factions, received support with 118 votes ‘for’ and one vote ‘against’. Only one lawmaker abstained from voting.
 
During the discussion of the bill, head of the NA Bright Armenia faction Edmon Marukyan noted that the martial law restricts the rights of the opposition, democracy in the country, because elections are not organized in a number of communities. According to him, the leading commission gave a negative conclusion to the issue, as the political forces had not yet negotiated, and now there is a solution, the day of the snap elections is announced (June 20-ed.). Ararat Mirzoyan, Speaker of Armenian Parliament also urged to vote for the lift of Martial Law a day before, during the hearings.
 
Armenia declared martial law and a general mobilization after Azerbaijan launched military aggression against Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) on September 27, and the Parliament approved the Government’s proposal.
